What a dealer management system is for
A traditional DMS grew up around the authorised franchise dealership: booking cars from the manufacturer, managing a service workshop with job cards and technicians, running a spare parts counter, handling warranty and insurance claims, and reporting back to the OEM. Those are real, complex needs - and almost none of them exist in an independent used car business.
What an independent used car dealer does instead
- Buys unique cars one at a time, from individuals, other dealers or auctions - often with a partner’s money on a specific car.
- Spends on reconditioning and paperwork per car, and needs to know that car’s landed cost.
- Sells under the GST margin scheme - tax on the margin, none on a loss - not GST on the full invoice.
- Sometimes sells a car it never owned, on commission.
- Runs one to a few showrooms with a small team, not a workshop with technicians.
